When you use SmartWatts, you trust that we will make good decisions with your smart meter data. We’re committed to keeping that trust, and that starts with helping you understand our privacy practices.

What data do we collect?

At SmartWatts we limit our data collection to the minimum required to provide you with great services. Wherever possible we do not store your data to maximize your privacy protection.

The following data is provided by you during account creation and update:

  • Personal identification information such as your name and email address.
  • Smart meter information such as your electric service identifier (ESID), meter number and service address.
  • Energy plan information such as your retail electric provider, contract end date, and rate per kWh.

The following data is collected directly from Smart Meter Texas with an approved data sharing agreement:

  • Data sharing agreement number, authorization and duration.
  • Meter consumption and generation data to include: 15-minute interval data, daily register reads, monthly reads, meter attributes, and premise attributes.

The following data is collected as you interact with the SmartWatts site:

  • Usage data such as access dates and times, features or pages viewed, application crashes and other user experience insights.
  • System data such as device type, browser, IP address, operating system, and preferred language.

How do we collect your data?

You provide SmartWatts with much of the data we collect.

We collect data when you:

  • Register or update your account.
  • Use or interact with our website.
  • Provide us with feedback via email.
  • Request customer support.

We also receive your meter consumption data directly from Smart Meter Texas. Please keep in mind that our privacy policy only applies to this site. You can learn more about the privacy policies of Smart Meter Texas by visiting https://www.smartmetertexas.com/security.

How will we use your data?

SmartWatts collects your personal data so that we can:

  • Create and manage your account.
  • Analyze and provide insights on your energy consumption.
  • Identify new features to enhance your user experience.
  • Email you with usage notifications, feature updates and marketing.

In order to properly configure your account, SmartWatts will share your email address and meter information with Smart Meter Texas to request your approval to share your meter consumption with us under a data sharing agreement.

In addition to the data we collect from you individually, we also aggregate consumption data across groups of users, which enhances our insights and recommendations, and is anonymized in such a way that you cannot be reasonably identified as an individual.

Marketing

From time to time, we would like to send you information about new products and services that we think may be to your benefit.

You may opt-out at any time to stop us from contacting you for marketing purposes. If you no longer wish to be contacted for marketing purposes, or if you want to make any other changes to your communication settings, please visit our contact page to let us know.

While our marketing materials may include advertisements from affiliates, SmartWatts will never sell or share your personal data with third parties for the purposes of direct marketing, except with your consent.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device that are used to remember your visitor and device settings during and across website sessions. When you visit SmartWatts, we may collect information from you automatically through cookies or similar technology.

Data Sharing Agreement with Smart Meter Texas

On an annual basis you will be asked to renew your data sharing agreement between Smart Meter Texas and SmartWatts.

Should you elect to discontinue that agreement, or should you decide to cancel your account at any time, we will immediately discontinue collecting your meter data and will only retain the minimum personal information required for account archival purposes.

Data used in aggregate that is not associated with you as an individual will continue to be used for analytical purposes.

Changes to Our Privacy Policy

We keep our privacy policy under regular review and place any updates on this web page. This privacy policy was last revised in June 2023.
